Why can't we all just get along?

Okay, so maybe it is obvious to everyone but me, but doesn't it seem that a religious belief that tells you to go out and kill everyone else is a bad idea? I guess I've never really understood religious fervor and all that, so I just continue to scratch my head when people I think are otherwise capable of coherent thought suddenly turn into frothing lunatics at the drop of a religious hat. Am I somehow the freak because I just don't get it? Why should I want to kill someone just because they don't see life (or the afterlife) my way?

My Aunt works with an older teen religious group, and the kids asked her about another world religion, which happens to be blamed for a war with several other world religions. They wanted to understand the differences in belief that they might soon be asked to die fighting. When she tried to answer their reasonable, well considered and natural curiosity, she ended up in trouble with the church because she was teaching the kids about "those other people." How can we possibly answer hate with more ignorance and hate? How will that solve anything? I think we should try to learn about and understand each other, then maybe we'd stop blowing each other up.

I guess I'd better put on my fire proof suit, but that's my soapbox and I'll just have to stand on it.

recovery!

Okay, the last few weeks have been insane, and I'm only now getting out of my resultant coma. Trying to actually get into LJ and put in my interests, connect with friends, etc.

So, does meeting the Queen of England count if you don't have your glasses on so all you see is a brightly colored blur?

My son is finally seeing enough of me to recognize me again. We may go to the park today and run around in the nice weather. My husband and I are trying to actually get to go out on a date tonight, so we can see "Pirates of the Carribean, the latest update." My mother's hair has grown back enough from her chemo that she actually had to brush it this morning - first time in over 6 months. So life is looking up!

Let's see how much trouble I can get into now...

History

I believe in the power of history, that's why I teach it. I think that we can learn from the mistakes and victories of the past. I can never get over the amazing way that ordinary people become extraordinary when they find themselves in circumstances beyond their control, beyond what they ever expected. Reading journals and letters from those before us ... it can be humbling, or inspiring, or fascinating in the details-

A twelve-year-old boy who survived the Alamo,

A fourteen-year-old girl who shelted Continental Army officers in her home during the Revoluntionary War,

A farmer's son who became an army captain, a colony leader, a historian and autobiographer,

An ordinary woman who recorded the daily life of her farm for over fifty years, through raising children, natural disasters, wars, celebrations, etc.

Will our emails, blogs, and ejournals outlive us the same way?

Well, Hubby and Kid are asleep, and I am trying to learn how to use LJ, having heard so much about it for so long. Difficult for some of us to leave the stone age.

Not a "desparate houswife" thank you, but a bit bored after a long day at work, teaching, cleaning up after supper, etc. Terribly mundane. So I guess I'll check out fandom on LJ and see what is up.

The current userpic? From a zoo tiger who adopted a litter of pigs. Its a wierd world.

Ciao.
